Recently, the Delhi High Court has granted compensation of Rs.1.18 crore to the family of a 49-year-old woman who has died after being hit by a truck two years ago in Dwarka’s Sector 8.
Dr Sumedh Kumar Sethi, the presiding officer of Motor Accident Claims Tribunal ( MACT), has ordered while settling the claim with an insurance company, that the woman’s family, which includes her husband and her two children who are in their 20s, be given the claim for the loss of income.
And, the Delhi Court has also stated that the deceased, Geeta Devi, who was working as an administrative officer in the LIC or Life Insurance Company and had a very progressive career in the government sector.
And, further to this, the First Information Report or the FIR which was filed has stated that a truck, which was being driven in the reverse direction has hit Geeta Devi (deceased) on 30th of December, 2019. And, she was taken to a hospital where unfortunately her condition was very serious. Later, she eventually succumbed to the injuries.
And, the whole process of settlement was a part of the National Lok Adalat, which is organized in the High Court of Delhi and the City Courts where the cases under the Negotiable Instrument Act, criminal compoundable cases, civil cases, bank recovery matters, and also cases under labor disputes are taken up speedily.
As per the press release by the Delhi State Legal Services Authority (DSLSA), 194 Lok Adalats have been constituted in all district courts, which have ultimately disposed of a total of 23,556 cases – 223 pre-litigation and
23,333 pending cases. And, the total fine and settlement amount sanctioned was Rs.176.51 crore.
To this, a Lok Adalat bench was earlier constituted at the Delhi High Court where almost 33 cases were settled and a settlement amount of Rs. 1.42 crore was sanctioned.
Overall 202 Lok Adalat benches were constituted at the national level and in which a total of 24, 431 cases were settled and the settlement amount was Rs.215.19 crores.
Member of secretary of Delhi State Legal Services Authority or (DSLSA), Shri Kanwal Jeet Arora has said that the next Lok Adalat, for settling the traffic challan cases will be held on 3rd of October, 2021, which is next month.
