Two counties have invalidated voter registrations due to having improperly relied on the unverified change-of-address. The election officials in both the counties required anyone on the challenged voters’ list who wanted to vote, to show their eligibility.

Georgia federal judge, Leslie Abrams Gardner has ordered the two counties to reverse the decision of removing thousands of voters on rolls for January 5th runoff election which would determine which out of the two – Democratic or Republicans would control the U.S. Senate.

The court order stated that it was prohibited to remove any challenged voters from the Ben Hills and Muscogee Counties registration lists based on National Change of Address data. The voters would otherwise be denied access to the ballot to the upcoming election.

The majority of the registrations that the counties tried to revoke, more than 4,000 belong to the Muscogee County, which the U.S. President-elect had Joe Biden had won. Another 150 were in Ben Hills where Donald Trump won with by a wide margin.

Around 2.1 million people have voted in the runoff elections which began on 14th December.  This race will ultimately decide whether Democrats would control both the Houses of Congress.

The runoffs are between Democrats Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff against the incumbent’s Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue.

This election results would impact Biden’s policy initiatives if, in a Republican-controlled Senate, they could block his agenda and his ability to secure the desired cabinet appointees in the. If Democrats win both the seats in Georgia, among the blocked counties, the Senate would be divided with – 50 Democrats and 50 Republicans. And a tie-breaking vote would be cast by the vice president, Kamala Harris.

The highly significant runoffs have raised record-breaking fundraising, and the leaders of both parties have made campaign stops in Georgia.
